Chess Joker pairs the classic game of chess with a deck of 256 clever Joke cards, designed by Carl Chudyk. After every turn, players draw a card and place it face-up beside the board, and on their next turn they can either make a standard chess move or use the card's unique effect instead. Playing a card's effect scores its Elo point value toward your score pile, while an unused card is simply discarded at turn's end. Players win either by checkmate or by accumulating 800 Elo points worth of played cards. A special Masquerade rule lets players substitute any piece for a card's named piece type if they've run out of that type, scoring it for a flat 25 points instead. It's a fresh, strategic twist on chess that keeps both novices and seasoned players thinking on their feet.
