Magical Athlete is a gleefully unhinged racing game originally designed by Takashi Ishida and updated by Magic: The Gathering creator Richard Garfield — and it shows. The premise is simple: draft a team of absurd fantasy and real-world racers from a pool of 20+ unique characters, then race them down the track by rolling a die and moving that many spaces. The chaos comes from the powers. Every racer has a wildly unbalanced, deeply unfair special ability — some teleport, some steal spaces, some reverse the track, some do things that shouldn't be possible in a racing game. The combination of straightforward movement rules and completely broken character abilities creates the kind of unpredictable, laugh-out-loud moments that make non-gamers and hardened hobbyists equally happy.
